C-SPAN bus at Lakewood FridayComcast will bring the C-SPAN Civics Bus and crew to North Little Rock to speak with students and teachers about C-SPAN’s 2010 StudentCam documentary film competition and C-SPAN’s public affairs coverage.
During the visit to Lakewood Middle School, students and faculty will have the opportunity to view past StudentCam entries and ask any questions they may have about this year’s competition. The bus will be at Lakewood at 12:25 p.m. on Friday and should be there until 2 p.m. The bus will be at McClellan High School earlier that same day.
StudentCam is an annual documentary competition with a total of $50,000 in cash prizes, which includes 75 student awards and 11 teacher awards.

“StudentCam is an opportunity for students to have a voice, and to explore issues in their community that they care deeply about,” said Rachel Katz, Marketing Representative for C-SPAN.
New Best Western Inn opens in city
Best Western International recently announced the opening of the Best Western JFK Inn and Suites, located at 2500 Main St. in North Little Rock. Owned by Samir Pothi, this brand-new, non-smoking hotel offers 65 guest rooms, including 23 suites.
Hotel amenities include an indoor heated swimming pool, hot tub, 24-hour fitness center and a complimentary full breakfast. Each room is equipped with, among other things, a refrigerator and microwave.
“We are very pleased to open the brand-new Best Western JFK Inn and Suites in North Little Rock, and we consider this hotel a perfect compliment to our existing properties in Arkansas,” said Mark Williams, vice president, North American development for Best Western International.
Chili fundraiser set for next month
The annual North Little Rock Friends of Animals Chili Supper fund raiser will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 at the Park HIll Christian Church located at 4400 John F. Kennedy Blvd.
Tickets are only $7 for adults and $4 for kids ages 9-12. Takeout is also available.
Both a live and silent auctions will be among the festivities.
All proceeds from this event go to the North Little Rock Animal Shelter Adoption, Rescue, Spay and Neuter programs.
CareLink needs volunteers
The CareLink Long-term Care Ombudsman Program will conduct training for volunteers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at the CareLink Office, 406 W. Fourth St. in North Little Rock.
Those interested in helping to ensure quality care for nursing home residents in central Arkansas can apply to be a volunteer online at www.care-link.org or call Joyce Hardy at 688-7454. Applications should be completed by Nov. 10 to participate in the November training session.
Volunteers make regular visits to long-term care facilities, make observations, interact with residents and report any possible problems to CareLink’s professional ombudsmen.
Community Band to perform soon
The North Little Rock Community Concert Band will present the final performance of the 2009 season at 3 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 8 at the Patrick Henry Hays Senior Citizens Center.
Musical director Rico Belotti will lead the all-volunteer wind band through a program he called “Mirth, Mystery and Memorial.”
