Truett McCurry, the 2001 National Distinguished principal, said he’s happy to be at Maumelle Middle School. The new position, assistant principal for discipline, was created at an October meeting of the Pulaski County Special School District board.
McCurry said, “Working as an assistant principal at Maumelle Middle School has been exciting. The school is filled with many great students, teachers, and parents. The leadership teem, John Pearce (principal) and Cathy Leon (assistant principal) is working tirelessly to give every child the best education possible. The students are orderly and move from class to class without having problems, either in the halls or restrooms.
In arguing for the position, which Superintendent Rob McGill opposed, school board president Tim Clark of Maumelle said he came off looking like he was suggesting Maumelle Middle School had more of a problem than other schools. He said all schools have discipline problems and he hopes this new position will be duplicated in every school. He said the teachers and administrators work hard at the school and do a terrific job. His desire was to help relieve them of the disciplinary responsibility with this new position so they could concentrate on teaching.
The new assistant principal said he begins each day the same way.
“I greet the students each morning as they get off the bus and give them a hello and tell them to have a nice day. Most of the students respond with a smile that makes my day. Getting the opportunity to help fill in for a few weeks has given me a chance to give back, not only to the school, but to the community of Maumelle. It's not only a great place to live and bring up a family, but it's the best place I've found for kids to get the best education possible. I love Maumelle and Maumelle Middle School. This is the place to be.”
