The burn ban imposed late last month by Pulaski County Judge Floyd C. "Buddy" Villines still is in effect for the entire county.

It is the impetus cited by Mayor Mike Watson and other city officials in imposing a fireworks ban in the city that will prevent any private use of fireworks within Maumelle today, July 4.

Although it was never planned this way, city officials said they would write citations to anyone caught using fireworks on or before July 4, simply because of the fire hazard.

Maumelle police Chief Sam Williams said he and his officers don’t want to write anyone a ticket, but that they would because of the safety concerns.

Maumelle fire Chief George Glenn said just one spark from a fireworks item could get hot enough to start a fire that quickly might engulf an area dried out recently from the extreme heat and lack of rain.
