Though it may not seem like much, Academics Plus made small steps last Friday against Wonderview.

Yes, the defending Class A state champs did defeat the Falcons, 56-24, but Academics Plus tripled its point total from the first meeting between the two. The first time they played, the Falcons only scored eight points.

"The girls commented about how we had more points," Academics Plus Coach Stephanie Wortham said. "You could tell we had more experience this time and learned a few things since the last time."

Senior Rhianna Mooney tallied 16 points, and sophomore Lisa Goodwin added six points. The Falcons (6-12, 4-8 A5-North) have three contests this week to try and get back on track. Wortham doesn’t know where Academics Plus stands in the conference but knows the Falcons need some victories.

Last night, they hosted Nemo Vista. In December, the Falcons lost by just three points, 28-25. On Thursday, they travel to Sacred Heart and host Little Rock Lisa Academy on Friday. That is a makeup game from last Tuesday and a contest Academics Plus was anxious to play.

"From what I remember, Sacred Heart had pretty good outside shooters," Wortham said. "We need to play good defense, cover their inside girls and make our shots. If we can stay out of foul trouble and not get tired, we are going to try and press Nemo Vista the entire night."

Wortham sees steady improvement in her team. Additionally, she thinks her whole team will be available this week as she was missing a player last Friday because of a church event and has had several girls sick. The plan for this week is to continue to practice shooting and also work on maintaining positive attitudes.

"We have a chance to have a good week," Wortham said. "We are gaining more confidence, and I’ve stressed to the girls the importance of this week and our chances."
