Not only defeating but run-ruling KIPP Delta last Friday was what the Academics Plus Lady Falcons needed heading into this week’s district tournament.
Academics Plus (2-7) won both games of the doubleheader in three innings by scores of 17-2 and 19-4. Chances are the Lady Falcons will meet KIPP Delta in the first round of the 1A-5 tournament Thursday. Seedings weren’t finalized until today.
"This was huge, and the girls were pumped up," Academics Plus Coach Ken Holland said. "We got a chance to score some runs, and it was good to be on the other side."
If not for a couple of bad throws, pitcher Bailey Kirby could have thrown a shutout in the first contest. Holland said it was one her best performances this season, and she also hit the ball including an inside the back home run in the second game. Lisa Goodwin also hit a three-RBI inside the park home run.
"I wondered where that came from," Holland said of Kirby’s pitching performance. "She was throwing pretty hard, and the whole team played well."
In the second contest, the Lady Falcons had to stage a short comeback. Pitcher Madison Prime recorded three up and three down in the first and third innings but yielded four runs in second frame. Not scoring the in first stanza, the Lady Falcons trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the second. They tallied seven runs and then erupted for 12 runs in the third. Kirby ended the game after her inside the park grand slam.
"We were hitting the ball pretty good," Holland said. "KIPP Delta wasn’t swinging the ball and scored its runs on walks and things like that. We got up for KIPP."
Holland added it was hard for the Lady Falcon batters to be patient. Though KIPP’s pitcher wasn’t very good and had a hard time throwing strikes, they still wanted to try and hit the ball.
"They had a hard time listening to me and sometimes went after pitches they shouldn’t have," Holland said. "We could have walked all day."
Academics Plus should play Thursday in the district tournament and if it wins would play two games.
