Central Arkansas Christian’s two conference wins last week clinched at least a share of the 4A-Central volleyball title.
Cade Smith’s Lady Mustangs played host to Maumelle on Tuesday and will finish the regular season at Marianna on Thursday. A win in either of those would secure the outright conference title for them.
CAC opened the week 16-4 overall and 11-1 in 4A-Central play. Maumelle and Marianna were tied for second at 9-3.
Last week, the Lady Mustangs beat Sylvan Hills in a non-conference match in three games and won conference matches over Clinton (in three) and Batesville Southside (in five).
"We clicked pretty good last Monday and Tuesday," Smith said. "They were both home matches, and we played about as well as we have all year. We struggled at Batesville a little, but we got away with the win, so that was good."
At Batesville Southside, CAC won the first game and led the second, 22-19, but lost Games 2 and 3.
"We fell apart for just a little while," Smith said. "We won 4 and 5 fairly easily, but it was a challenge. We had every opportunity to lose. They were doing some things that were unorthodox, and we weren’t adjusting. The things they were doing were smart on their part, and it took a while for us to adjust.
"But we haven’t had very many matches that weren’t three games, so we needed that. We may have to win another one like that this week."
CAC will play in the 4A-Central District Tournament, which opens Monday, Oct. 15, at Maumelle. A win this week would secure the Lady Mustangs a bye to the Oct. 16 semifinals and an automatic berth in the Class 4A State Tournament, which begins Oct. 30 at the Harrison Recreation Center.
