Seasons have wrapped up for the Maumelle golf and tennis teams with both sports represented in the state tournaments.

Although the boys’ golf team shot its highest score the whole year, the Hornets finished third in the state tournament with a score of 255. Central Arkansas Christian (232) won the title followed by Valley View with a 244 score. A bright spot was freshman Caleb Kubacak making all-state.

"We expected runner-up," Maumelle Coach Michael Shook said. "Valley View won state last year, and we knew they were solid. We played them earlier in the season in Heber Springs and they beat us by one stroke. We knew they were good but also what we were capable of. Their number three guy shot the best for them. Third gives us extra motivation for next year."

The meet was held at Maumelle Country Club, and Shook noted that it was a tough course. He thinks nerves and inexperience also contributed to the Hornet’s highest score of the season.

"After nine holes, Caleb was one over," Shook said. On number 10, he shot an eight. That hurt him, and he couldn’t get back on track."

In addition to Kubacak, freshman Ryan Spurlock and seniors Eric Myers and Logan Joseph also competed. Both Myers and Joseph didn’t qualify last season so Maumelle was basically an inexperienced team.

In the girls’ division, senior Vesna Petrovik competed as an individual.

Freshman Rett Matthews was the only Hornet player who qualified for the state tennis tournament. He qualified after finishing runner-up in the conference tournament. Matthews participated in the state tournament in Arkadelphia and defeated Michael Pollard from Cave City in the first round before being eliminated in the second round.

"It went pretty well," Maumelle Coach Bynum Matthews said. "For a freshman, he had a great season."

Although, they didn’t qualify for state, the doubles teams of Robert Scott and Nick Hawkins and Spencer Burton and Ben Setalsana did win one match at the conference tournament.

With a young team and if everyone comes back, Matthews is expecting great things for next season.
