While the rain came Tuesday morning and then rolled back in later that night, it was dry Tuesday afternoon and evening for Maumelle’s annual Fourth of July celebration.

The day started with a parade that ended at Lake Willastein.

It was followed by the fourth annual Maumelle Area Chamber of Commerce cardboard boat races.

The objective to cut across the lake and not sink, which none of the boats did.

“The first year, people just went out in cardboard boxes,” Maumelle Mayor Mike Watson said. “Then they got wise and figured it out.”

While perhaps not sea-worthy, the boats didn’t have any problems at the lake.

The races drew quite the crowd as spectators lined both sides of the lake to watch.

After the races were over, the fun and festivities continued and the evening was capped with fireworks.
