Arkansas Choral Society to present Handel’s “Messiah” Friday, Dec. 1

The Arkansas Choral Society will perform portions of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Messiah at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in the sanctuary at Calvary Baptist Church, 5700 Cantrell Road, Little Rock. A silent auction starts at 6:30 p.m.

Music Director Kent Skinner will conduct the Choral Society and members of the University of Arkansas at Monticello Chamber Chorus, musicians from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and soloists Kelly Singer, soprano; Diana Salesky, alto; Drew Seigla, tenor; and Gregory Pearson, bass.

This year’s version of the oratorio will include most of the Christmas portion (Part I), plus selected arias, recitatives and choruses from Part II, including the “Hallelujah” and “Amen” choruses. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by at the door, by calling 870-820-9645 or online at

The society, made up of amateur singers primarily from central Arkansas, regularly pairs with college and high school choruses and awarding scholarships to young choral singers. The group has presented the Messiah since 1930.

Our “Laidback Christmas Eve” service will be at 4 p.m., with kids, singing, stories, and candlelight. Our classic “Candlelight and Communion” service will be at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary, featuring carols, candles, and a brass orchestra. And then our “Circle of Light” service is at 10 p.m., with acoustic music by the LEVItes praise band and holy communion.
