A Fort Smith police officer arrested a man after reportedly wrestling a man away from another man who he approached with a knife.

James Windell Palmer of Fort Smith was arrested on suspicion of felony aggravated assault with a sharp instrument Wednesday. Officer Jose Pacheco Calderon reportedly grabbed Palmer and threw him to the ground when he "went after" a man he had been argument with holding a knife, the arrest report states.

Calderon reportedly found Palmer holding the knife outside of La Huerta on Garrison Avenue, drew his firearm and told him to drop it. Calderon grabbed Palmer by the neck when he held the knife close to the man, the report states.

In the report, Calderon stated that he decided to "go hands on" with Palmer because there were bystanders around and didn't feel safe to fire his weapon with them in the area, the report states.

Palmer remained in custody at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center on Friday in lieu of zero bond. He is set to appear in Sebastian County Circuit Court on Monday.
