The Great Arkansas River Cleanup on Oct. 6 in North Little Rock was very exciting to the volunteers who saw citizens came out to help beautify the area even with the cold weather, according to Randy Naylor, chairman Keep North Little Rock Beautiful.

"We had about 50 people show up to help we also picked up 72 bags of trash or about 1,440 pounds," Naylor said. "We also participated in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The data that we collected during this Cleanup is our effort to help bring awareness to the serious consequences of the global marine debris problem."

Keep North Little Rock Beautiful is a brand new affiliate with Keep America Beautiful and this river cleanup is something the new organization wants to do yearly, Naylor said.

"We also want to encourage all of Arkansas to help us cleanup this river," Naylor said. "We will in the future want this to turn into a full blown cleanup of the Arkansas River from Colorado to the Mississippi river. We do think that in years to come that we will make a difference in how clean our rivers in America are."

Anyone wanting to get involved an e-mail the organization at Dauphne Trenholm of Keep North Little Rock Beautiful said volunteers picked up items such as cigarette butts, soft drink cans, old tires, discarded clothes, and even a bear paw.

"One volunteer from each small group also collected and recorded data about the litter that was picked up, to be used as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s global report studying the impact of harmful trash along waterways," Trenholm said.
