Central Arkansas Christian’s boys golf team won the Class 4A state title last week at Maumelle Country Club, holding off Valley View by 12 strokes.

Landon Hearnes, a senior, was medalist with 73 and will compete in the Arkansas High School Overall Championship at Pleasant Valley Country Club on Thursday. The top three finishers in each state championship qualify for the Overall.

Hearnes led the Mustangs to a team score of 232. Valley View was second at 244, followed by Maumelle, 255; Malvern, 256; Pocahontas, 258; Lonoke, 265; Ozark, 268; Pea Ridge, 277; Monticello, 280; Subiaco, 282; Clinton, 299; and Dewitt, 306.

Hearnes celebrated his first individual title and the Mustangs’ first team title of his CAC career.

“We were just trying to win state before we graduated,” he said. “I knew we had a good chance this year. All the other guys didn’t play as well as they’d hoped, but it didn’t matter.”

Other CAC scores were Michael Foster, fourth with 78; Peyton Herald, seventh with 81; and Jake Wanner, ninth with 82. All four earned all-state honors.

Hearnes finished fourth individually last year as the Mustangs finished Class 5A state runner-up.

He qualified for the Overall as a sophomore.

“I’m trying to win it,” he said of his goal for his senior year. “I’ve quit deer hunting and started practicing.”

CAC freshman Alexa Goodlow finished eighth in the Class 4A State Girls Tournament at Glenwood recently with 93. She, too, was named all-state.
