A 19-year-old North Little Rock man has been arrested on a charge of first-degree murder of the stabbing death of another city man.

According to an an arrest report from the North Little Rock Police department, Devante M. Cooney, 4419 Orange St., was arrested after police responded on Monday at 6:15 p.m. to a call at 1118 N. H St., Dixie Addition, in North Little Rock, in regards to an individual who had been stabbed.

"Upon arrival, officers found Sidney Rufus lying on the living room floor bleeding from the chest and back areas," according to the arrest report.

A preliminary examination revealed that Rufus had been stabbed multiple times. He was transported to Baptist Memorial where he was pronounced dead as a result of being stabbed, according to the arrest report.

Witnesses at the scene told police they observed Cooney stab Rufus while the two were inside 1118 N. H St.

"During a post Miranda Rights interview, Devante Cooney admitted he stabbed Rufus for the purpose of committing a sacrifice," according to the arrest report.

Cooney appeared in court on Tuesday to face the charges against him.
