Police are asking the public for any information leading to the identification of an unknown driver who struck a three-year-old Sherwood boy and killed him in the parking lot of Parkcrest Apartments on Manson Road in Sherwood.

Sherwood Police Capt. Kel Nicholson said Jaylen Diggs died at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at Children’s Hospital from injuries sustained when someone driving either a red SUV or truck struck him on Monday evening and fled the scene.

“We would hope that the driver would come forward,” Nicholson said.

On Monday, at 6:51 p.m., when there was still light, Jaylen was struck in the parking lot near the children’s playground area of the apartment complex.

Nicholson said the boy’s mother was working and was being watched by his grandmother. However, Jaylen was unsupervised at the time of the hit-and-run.

Nicholson said the only witnesses to incident were juveniles who told police that a red truck or SUV struck the boy.

Jaylen was taken to Children Hospital following the accident but succumb to his injuries, Nicholson said.

Police have been able to obtain some surveillance tape from nearby business that recorded a red SUV going into the apartment complex parking lot shortly before the accident, he said.

Nicholson said an investigation will take place later about how the boy was unsupervised at the time of the incident but now police are working on trying to find the driver.

“Anyone with information should call the police department,” Nicholson said. “The family is distraught.”
