The Sylvan Hills Lady Bears opened their 2014 volleyball season with a loss Tuesday night at Greenbrier.

The Lady Panthers were just a little too strong this around as the Lady Bears looked a little inconsistent on their first trip on the court. Greenbrier won 25-19, 25-17 and 25-18.

"We have the potential to be a very good team," said Sylvan Hills coach Harold Treadway. "We were streaky, but during those good streaks, we competed as well against them as we ever have."

Karley Walton did a good job for the Bears in the service game, but the defense was caught on their heels at times against the powerful Greenbrier attack.

"We’ve had some success against them before, but they’ve also gotten the best of us when things started going wrong," said Treadway. "I think part of it could have been mental when they got up on us by two or three and we start thinking ‘well here we go again.’ That’s just something we have to work past. This game changes so fast from offense to defense that you have to be prepared for everything mentally."

The Lady Bears made several runs during each match, but those runs came while down and brought the Bears back even. Once back even, Greenbrier would get the break they needed and retake the lead.

The Lady Bears will host the Searcy Lady Lions for their first home match of the season on Thursday at 5 p.m.
