Central Arkansas Christian’s Christyn Williams will represent the United States again this summer as part of the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup 2017.
Williams, the CAC junior who is the third two-time Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year, will join Janelle Bailey of Matthews, N.C.; Aquira DeCosta of Sacramento, Calif.; and Destiny Littleton of San Diego, Calif., on the American three-on-three team that will compete June 28-July 2 in Chengdu, China.
Williams tweeted over the weekend: “Blessed once again. #ChinaBound”
On Monday, she retweeted Bailey: “It’s the greatest feeling when you have another chance to wear USA across your chest! China here we come!”
The four, playing together on team Bounce Back, went 7-0 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to win the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s 3x3 U18 National Tournament on Sunday and earn the China trip. They were coached by Kara Lawson, the former Tennessee Lady Vol and WNBA player who is now an ESPN broadcaster.
“Just another great opportunity for her to travel and see the world,” CAC coach Steve Quattlebaum said. “She’s playing against international competition against the best players in the world. Not many people get that opportunity. It’s good attention for our program. Our kids are really excited for her.”
As a junior, the 5-foot-11 guard averaged 26.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.1 assists per game in leading the Lady Mustangs to a 29-5, Class 4A state quarterfinal finish.
Williams was also one of two juniors named to the Naismith Trophy High School Girls All-America team.
Williams, who has narrowed dozens of scholarship offers to Baylor, Notre Dame, UCLA, Tennessee and UConn, led the USA team to a bronze medal in the FIBA U17 World Championship in Spain last summer, a year after being named an alternate for the U16 team. She is a three-time All-State player and is ranked the No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2018 by Blue Star Basketball.
According to www.usab.com, all four players from Bounce Back are veterans of USA Basketball five-on-five national teams.
Also qualifying for the 3x3 World Cup are China, Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Germany, Guam, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia and Venezuela.
According to the website, USA women’s 3x3 U18 teams are 41-5 since 2011. The Americans won the gold medal at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and the 2012 and ‘13 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships; silver medals at the 2015 and 2016 3x3 U18s and bronze at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and 2011 3x3 U18 Worlds.
