Two overall titles were captured and four school records were set by the Maumelle Hornets in the Meet of Champs last Saturday in Russellville.
Claire Luallen and Dylan Douglas ran the top times in the state in capturing Meet of Champs victories. Douglas won the 3200 for the second year in a row in a time of 9:28.27. Luallen finished first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.98.
“They really look forward to the Meet of Champs,” Maumelle Coach Nick Taylor said. “All year long, they have to run three to four events at the meets. At this one, they can concentrate on one, and there is no pressure.”
Luallen also placed third in the 300 hurdles and set a school mark with a time of 47.05. Jackson Fry, who will continue his career at Arkansas State University, was fourth in the 800 with a school record time of 1:57.05, and Brandi Allen finished fourth in the 400 with a school record time of 59.09. The boys’ 4x400 relay team of Bradley Miller, Asher Hamlin, Carter Reynolds and Fry also set a school record of 3:28.74 by finishing fifth. Sierrra Temple placed third in the 100, and Reynolds finished fourth in the 1600.
The meet is the gathering of the first-place finishers from all the classes and then next nine competitors with the fastest times or distances.
“The weather was great, and the competition was good,” Taylor said. “Competing against the other athletes was competitive, and we did incredible.”
