Several locals are representing the state this week in the sixth Southern Junior Cup Matches, a competition among teams from Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Alabama, at The Country Club of Oxford in Oxford, Miss.

The team comprises six males and six females. Connor Gaunt of Cabot, the Arkansas State Golf Association’s Junior Boys Player of the Year, leads the boys team. Joining him are Blaine Calhoon of Ward, Jackson Marseilles and Logan Greer of Harrison, Noah Minton of Jonesboro and Josh McNulty of White Hall.

Four locals are on the girls squad — Josie Roberson and Alexis Montgomery of Maumelle, Hannah Bakalekos of Sherwood and Mackenzie Lee of North Little Rock. They join Elizabeth Moon of Forrest City, the ASGA’s Junior Girls Player of the Year; and Sydney Staton of Fort Smith.

Arkansas captains include Ryan Spurlock of Maumelle, the 2014 and ‘16 Junior Boys Player of the Year and a three-time member of the Southern Junior Cup team; and Bryant Fortin, director of junior golf for the ASGA.

“This week is something I look forward to year-in and year-out,” Fortin said. “The entire competition is a blast for the kids, parents and any guest who attends.”

Play will follow a Ryder Cup format with four-ball, foursome and individual match play rounds. Four-ball and foursome matches will consist of two-person mixed teams. Singles matches will conclude the three-day event Thursday.

Selection was based on point standings on the ASGA’s Junior Player of the Year races and four captain’s picks.
