North Little Rock Boys:
Fresh off a 66-40 beat down of defending Class 4A champ Baptist Prep last Saturday, North Little Rock and Johnny Rice take a break for Christmas before journeying north to Neosho, Mo., for the second consecutive year.
The Holiday Classic there starts Wednesday, Dec. 27 with North Little Rock on the portion of the bracket.
They will face Middle College High School out of Memphis, Tenn., at 5 p.m.
And, of course, while North Little Rock and Maumelle haven’t faced each other in the regular season, ever, the two could potentially meet in the semifinals as two central Arkansas schools are on the same side of the bracket.
Maumelle and North Little Rock were also in this tournament last season.
Of the 16 teams in the field, a total of six are from Arkansas with Van Buren, Bentonville West, Morrilton and West Memphis.
North Little Rock girls:
Always road warriors, Daryl Fimple and his squad are in Phoenix this week for the Tournament of Champions. They played on Wednesday against Rock Christian Academy of Upper Marlboro, Md., in the first round with two more games for Thursday and Friday of this week before flying home for Christmas.
But, they won’t be home for long as they then head to Mountain Home for the 1st Arkansas Bail Bonds Holiday Tournament where they will face Class 4A Highland on Wednesday, Dec. 27 with more games set for Thursday and Friday.
Then another break for New Year’s and conference action starts Jan. 5 with a game at Little Rock Central.
A modest proposal, maybe, instead of having North Little Rock teams crisscross the country for games that Terry Hartwick and crew at North Little Rock Parks and Recreation could get into the high school tournament business with Verizon Arena and the North Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau put on some games locally.
Just a thought.
Sylvan Hills boys
The Bears, 2-6, will travel to Hot Springs Lakeside on Wednesday, Dec. 27 with blended conference action kicking in early in 2018 with a game at Pulaski Academy on Jan. 2.
Sylvan Hills then hosts Jacksonville on Jan. 5.
