FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ offensive bonanza clouting 13 home runs among 49 hits and 39 runs in its 9-4, 14-2 and 16-6 SEC sweep of the Kentucky Wildcats last Friday and Saturday at Baum Stadium netted Razorbacks infielders Jax Biggers and Casey Martin honors Monday from the SEC Office in Birmingham, Ala.

Junior shortstop Biggers of Missouri Center, Texas was named SEC Player of the Week and for the second time this young season freshman third baseman Casey Martin of Lonoke was named SEC Freshman of the Week.

For the 5-game week, also including sweeping two from the Texas Longhorns, 13-4 and 7-5 last Tuesday and Wednesday at Baum, leadoff man Biggers drew eight walks and hit .588. with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI.

Against nationally No. 4 Kentucky in the season’s first SEC series, Biggers went 9 for 12 with two home runs, one for each game in Saturday’s doubleheader, and drove in seven runs. He went 2 for 3 with an RBI Friday night.

For Saturday’s doubleheader Biggers was 3 for 4 with four RBI and 4 for 5 with two RBI.

“Biggers turned it on this weekend,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said Saturday night after the Razorbacks completed their doubleheader and series sweep. “He’s been OK with the bat, keeping his average up there, really because he’s an experienced player and knows how to take a walk and some things. But he hit the ball hard the past couple of three days. He was a major plus for us at the top of the order.”

Martin for the week’s five games hit .358 with three home runs and seven RBI. Martin has hit so well all season that the big week actually lowered his team leading batting average to .393 even as he extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Martin also leads the 16-4 Razorbacks in home runs, seven, and RBI 22 and even sacrifice bunts, three including one against Kentucky.

Perhaps most amazingly against Kentucky, Martin scored from first on a single to right.

“He can run, can’t he?” Van Horn said, smiling at the close of Saturday’s press conference.

The Razorbacks start a 9-game road schedule playing the Charlotte 49ers tonight and Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C leading into a 3-game SEC series Friday through Sunday in Gainesville, Fla. against the reigning national champion Florida Gators.
