Consistency is what North Little Rock Coach Brock Moore hopes the Charging Wildcats can continue.
After starting the season 5-1, the Wildcats (8-6) then went on a five-game losing streak. Currently, they are riding a three-game winning streak which includes a 7-1 victory over Little Rock Catholic last Saturday.
“We are playing and learning our roles,” Moore said. “I want us to stay consistent.”
This season, the Wildcats replaced a lot of starters from last year. Moore had lots of questions at the beginning of the season but some of those have been answered. What helped him learn more about his team was a tournament in Gulf Shores during Spring break. Even though North Little Rock lost all four games there, Moore said they returned an improved team.
“We came back a better team in all phases,” he said “We didn’t play too bad. We just gave up some big innings which is typical of inexperienced, young kids,”
Senior Tucker Sparks is the Wildcats’ go-to guy on the mound. But it was senior Trent Bunting who turned in a stellar performance against Catholic. In the complete game victory, he gave up four hits, struck out 12 batters and walked two.
After scoring a run in each of the first three innings, the Wildcats broke open the contest in the fourth stanza by recording four runs. Christian Litton, Grant Shalan and Ben Morris all hit in runs. North Little Rock tallied seven hits with Weston Mcghee contributing two. In addition to Litton and Shalan, Dezmond Cordova, John Henry Maloch and Bear Sparks all had one hit.
A contest with Fort Smith Northside on Tuesday was reschedule to Wednesday. The Wildcats travel to Bryant on Thursday for a 7A-Central showdown. Currently, Conway leads the league with a 4-0 record, Bryant is 4-1 and North Little Rock is 3-1.
“Our goal is to win a conference title,” Moore said. “It’s early, and we are still in the mix.”
